So You Want To Do A Competition?

“You won’t recognize your body.”

It’s 2 p.m. on February 7, my first training session with Daniel.    I cajole both children into Kids Club and say a silent prayer that I don’t get paged in the middle of the session.  Rylee is fine, she’s used to school, but little Henry is permanently attached to my hip and as I leave him in the middle of the toy land I hear him repeating a mantra: “Oh no.  Oh no.  Oh no. ” The babysitter assures me he will be fine.

Daniel is sitting at the training desk.  Chris is in the training area with another client.  She is not looking at me but I still feel pangs of guilt.  “So you want to do a body building competition,” he says smiling.

“Yes.  Texas Shredder.  My husband wants me to reiterate that I don’t want to look like a scary gorilla woman, just very good in a bikini.”

“You won’t look like a gorilla woman.”

“Oh good.”

“Have you ever done a competition before?”

“Never.”

“Why do you want to do this?” he inquires, his head tilted to the side.

“Well, my high school reunion is coming up in the fall and I seem to do better when I’m training for something specific.  Just saying, ‘I want to be healthy forever’ is not really working for me.”

“Which competition did you want to enter?”

“The Texas Shredder in April.”

“No offense, but the other girls have had a huge head start on their training and you’re not going to be ready for Shredder.”  Ouch.  I laugh though.  At least he’s honest and not blowing smoke up my size 14 ass.  I don’t want to go on stage and look ridiculous.

“There’s a competition in June called the Adela Garcia.  That’s the one I want you to sign up for.  But before you do that, you need to do some research.  You need to know what you’re getting yourself into.”  He writes down some things on a piece of paper that mean nothing to me.  NPC.  Adela Garcia.  “These are some websites I want you to check out.  Watch YouTube videos of female body building competitions, specifically bikini and fitness.  Next time we meet tell me what you think and if you still want to do this.”

Well, now I’m nervous.  What am I getting myself into?

I guess my face is wearing my thoughts because he smiles and says, “Lisa, you’re going to be amazed by what you’re going to accomplish in one month.  You won’t recognize your body.  Let’s take your measurements.”
