Springtime is just around the corner. Warmer weather. Longer Days. Beautiful flowers. And allergies. Her in Austin, Texas it seems we have cornered the allergy market. Everyone I know is sneezing, blowing their noses, rubbing their eyes and is just plain miserable.
Researchers took 422 people with pollen allergies and divided them into three groups. The first group took antihistamines and had acupuncture treatments. The second group took antihistamines and received fake acupuncture treatments (which means they had acupuncture needles placed in their skin but in random non-meaningful points.) The third group just took antihistamines.
After two months the people who received real acupuncture had fewer symptoms and needed less medicine than the other two groups. (Let’s hear it for traditional healing!)
What’s also interesting is that the second group also reported needing less medication, which suggests a strong placebo effect. The researchers need to do further studies, but this is encouraging news for people who want to relieve their symptoms and antihistamines aren’t working.
How about you? Are you suffering from allergies too?
